Products and Services that the INTERNET killed.

Products and Services that the INTERNET killed.

Since the dawn of the internet age, a lot has changed in our world today. Connecting with people has become easier. making money, losing money, buying things, selling things.

People nowadays are almost always connected to the internet. Many companies have thrived in the internet. Many new jobs were created. Much more opportunities for the prepared ones have come. But, let's take a look at those products or services that has been adversely affected by the Internet age.

1. Encyclopedias

-  in the early 70's till around the 90's, majority of the households around the world had encyclopedias. Well, that was one way you could tell if the family were well off. The more sets, the more money. Now, with the internet, you could simply google whatever you are looking for and BAMM! you have it. And mostly its free!

2. Dictionaries

- Same with the encyclopedia's most homes had at least 1 dictionary. Sometimes, 2 or more as there were different competing brands like webster.

3. International Calling

- Well, this part hasn't died yet, but according to my sources, there has been significant drop in international calls volume via the traditional phones and re-loadable cards. With the ease of using various services in the internet for calls either direct to the phones of the person you want to call or to the other persons computer, people are shifting to the more cost effective and easier to use VOIP.

What are the lessons we can learn from this? Business that are able to successfully make the change from one format to another, LIVES.

We can still see other changes occurring today in the Internet. One new aspect that has been significantly gaining momentum is the move to the CLOUD.

I'm pretty much sure that in the next couple of years we will find more products or services that the Internet killed.

"change is good, only if you can keep up with it."

Got any other ideas of products or services that was affected by the Internet? Feel free to share them.

Another Win for Paper vs Plastic

Another Win for Paper vs Plastic

As me and my family were roaming around SBMA a couple of days ago, we decided to stop by one of the stores inside to buy some necessities. I saw something that reminded me of the Paper vs plastic law

paper vs plastic

Starting January 1, 2013, SBMA will be requiring and enforcing the no plastic bag policy to help protect our environment.

As most people who have visited SBMA know, these guys are serious about what they do.

Traffic rules are strictly enforced in their area. Be aware of the 1st stop, 1st go policy.

How to apply for a Job

How to apply for a Job

A couple of things you need to remember when applying for a job.

  1. Resume - be sure your resume is correct and updated. ( if you dont know how to write a resume - research it on the internet )Know where and what things are written on your resume.

  2. Before you email your application, read the job description of the job and the company profile, so you know what you are getting into.

  3. Remember the companies that you applied at. ( If a representative from those companies contact you, it would sound stupid of you to say - what? I dont remember applying. Or the opening is for a telemarketer and you ask - is this for the technical support position/

  4. Make sure you attend the interview set.

  5. Dress Appropriately. You are not going out for a night out or lounging in starbucks. Business Attire.

  6. Be on time or before the time. Being late sucks. It means you have no respect for the time of the interviewer. And it will give the impression that you will always be late if you get accepted.

Paper vs. Plastic

Paper vs. Plastic

In the past few months, moves to ban the use of plastic bags and styrofoam in stores and other places have gained momentum. In Quezon City, Ordinance No. SP-2127, has been passed as of Aug 16, banning the use of these materials.Which is better, Paper vs. Plastic?

Even the  Local Government Unit (LGU) of Naguilian, in La Union, has prohibited the use of plastic bags in their town.

Also participating in this no plastic policy is Las Pinas City which has passed Ordinance No. 1036-11, banning the use of plastic bags and polystyrene packs in all commercial establishments doing business in Las Piñas City.

Even in Mandaluyong City, certain days of the week, all stores are required to use paper bags and boxes as opposed to plastic bags and polystyrene packs.

Is it too late for these environment friendly moves? Or is it really environment friendly?

Environmentalists say that this might not be the solution to the problem, worse, it might exacerbate the situation as you need to cut down more trees to produce paper bags. Just how many trees depends on a lot of things, like what type of pare, what type of trees and others. But, it is clear that you need trees to make paper, with our forests and other natural resources quickly dwindling, is this what we want?

Or should we step up drives for our population to recycle?

Jobs you can do while working at home

Jobs you can do while working at home

As mentioned earlier in other posts regarding working at home, there are a lot of things you can do to work at home.

In this post, I'd like to discuss the possibility of BUY and SELL.

Working at home

ONLINE

You can either put up and build your own online sales shop, or take advantage of the myriad of sites that let you sell your stuff in their sites.

Online buying and selling has been around for as long as the internet has been there. A lot of websites out there make money by letting people post the items they want to sell for a small percentage of the sales.

The most prominent among these websites is known as ebay.com. You can use credit cards or paypal.

In the Philippines, one of the biggest online buy and sell sites is sulit and the newest online buying site is shopinas

Dont get me wrong, these sites are different from the group buying sites.

Sites like these doesn't receive the money from the buyer. It goes directly to the seller via paypal or other means, compared to group buying sites, where the company that owns the sites collects the payment and pays off the seller.

The restaurant is owned and operated by Chef Luliong Yu Food Products which started operations in Ayala Abreeza Mall last january 2011.

The dishes served tastes good and very affordable.

Try the lechon kawali rice - I guess this is a lot healthier since it was cooked without any oil.

How to start your own call center.

How to start your own call center?

First of all, dont get into the call center business if you have never had any experience in the Call Center industry. or dont have anyone that you trust that you can rely on.

So, now you want to start your own center. First, you need to have an account. By account, I mean a campaign or project.

Campaigns are usually classified as 2 types:

1. Inbound

2. Outbound.

It's a lot easier to find outbound campaigns than inbound campaigns. A lot riskier too.

Once you have your campaign, you need your office or center to run the campaign from. You have 2 options to this:

A. Build your center from ground up. Find a suitable office space, rent it. Buy the partitions, tables , computers, chairs , headsets and the various other things that you will need. Apply for the internet connection. ( If you dont know what you need - ask around.)

Setup the office for use.

After that your set to go!

B. Lease you office space requirements.

There are a lot of facilities that offer seat leasing. Basically, it means that you lease the seats ( usually means 1 table/ chair/ pc plus internet connection) from a company that offers those services.

When seat leasing, its very important to keep in mind a couple of things.

1. Noise level in the site ( Too many people doing calls means higher level of noise and makes it harder for you and the person you are talking to, to understand each other.

2. Internet bandwidth available.

3. Office location

4. Availability of places to eat. (especially at night)

To get a better understanding about outsourcing, download this free outsourcing guide.

Updated Truth in Lending Act or Republic Act 3765 passed in 1963

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas recently approved the updating of the Truth in Lending act or Republic Act 3765.

What does this mean? Basically, it protects those that have loans from banks of credit cards from from misleading interest rates from our loan providers.

BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. and the board have approved the updates last July 7, 2012.

VOIP Calling Plans

With all the advances in technology nowadays, calling around the world have become very easy and affordable. Here are a couple that we have used extensively in the past.

Skype - offers unlimited calling plans to a lot of countries around the world. It offers unlimited calling to the USA for both landlines and mobile phones.( unlimited in the sense that you do not exceed 10,000 minutes per month or call 50 different numbers per day.)

Skype also offers online numbers which you can subscribe for a fee, so that people from the country you subscribed to can call you back. It even offers numbers per state in the US.

Yahoo Messenger - YM also offers calls to countries, but no unlimited calling plans.

Magicjack - As far as we know - magicjack only has unlimited calls to the US and also includes an online number. Check the fine print with magicjack. As far as we know they already have a limit to the calls you can make. One drawback of the earlier version is that you need to attach the magicjack to a PC.

* Magicjack plus - no need for a PC anymore - just plug in to your router and attach your phone.

GoAutodial - is a voip provider that has 2 options - a public and a private option. Try it now - the public option provides free 120 mins for a test. They also offer A-Z calling options.

Turn your PC into a wireless router.

Always on the go? Always working on your laptop outside the office? Ever needed to share your laptop's internet to your phone, ipad, or other devices and forgot to bring the cords?

Yesterday, a techie friend of mine  recommended to me a free software developed open source that could help solve your problems. Its called VIRTUAL ROUTER. And it turns your standard laptop to a router and lets other wifi users connect to the internet via your connection.

Security concerns? No worries. The virtual router includes the standard security like password protection for your Virtual Router connection.

The software was developed by Chris Pietschmann - Chris is a Microsoft MVP on the Windows Live Platform, a Co-Founder of Carto LLC.

Virtual router can be used with any Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 Computer.

So it's time to say goodbye to your wireless routers and hello Virtual Router!
